Gods may exist, but they’re too far removed to care about humans. So our best purpose in life is not to please gods, but to be happy. Which is not as easy as it sounds, since short-term pleasures and selfishness create longer-term misery.

Thus taught Epicurus, 2,300 years ago. Hiram Crespo brings the Epicurean passion for maximum happiness into the modern age with this practical guidebook.

Step one in what Crespo calls the “hedonic calculus” is to rein in desires, so they become easier to satisfy – just the opposite of the luxurious indulgence so often incorrectly associated with Epicureanism. From there, he offers a blizzard of ideas, from healthy recipes that stimulate natural “feel-good” chemicals in the brain to the journaling of positive events, even on a bad day. The highest attainable happiness, though, is communing with friends – it just doesn’t get any better than that.

Being smart about being happy means using the best knowledge and tools available. Tending the Epicurean Garden is an excellent place to start.

Hiram Crespo shows us that Epicurus has therapeutic value even today, providing a methodology which can increase happiness through careful application. It's accessible and topical, referring to recent developments in neuroscience and physics showing that Epicurus' epistemology is timeless. Truly an important modern work on Epicureanism, one I am happy to recommend.

Tending the Epicurean Garden edition by Hiram Crespo Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews

When I first started reading this book, I was afraid that it was going to be outside my comfort zone. As a person with mostly technical degrees and a limited exposure to formal philosophy studies, I was sure this book was going to be cryptic and incomprehensible. Much to my surprise and pleasure, this relatively small book was extremely easy to read and comprehend. The language used by Crespo is different from the typical philosophy book making this book fully accessible to the general public.
Most people have a hard time connecting philosophy to everyday life, much less feel like they understand the mind of anyone who lived in Ancient Greece thousands of years ago. Effortlessly Crespo manages to bring forth both these tasks to make pull the reader into the book.
Crespo connects Epicurean thinking to modern life displaying how easy such thinking can lead to better community, better personal life, and a much better society as a whole. He delineates steps to be followed by the reader to achieve an Epicurean lifestyle that is balanced, fulfilling, and best of all, very happy. One might say that once you have finished reading the book, you realize it is a manual for applied Epicurean living without being a self-help book. He discusses in great detail all the critical aspects of Epicureanism including the idea that you can have a life of pleasure, goodness, and lower stress while being ethical, moral, decent and honorable. In fact, it is the right application of this philosophy that creates these virtues that most religions, created centuries after Epicurus, often claim as their own.
This book shows, surprisingly, that the basis for physics and science (more specifically the scientific method) were already being considered and thought about by the ancient Greeks. It shows an early history of materialism, naturalism, and the encouragement of critical thinking encouraging the reader to use the senses, reason, and avoiding dogmatic thinking that makes so many people unhappy. This book is an excellent introduction to a particular Greek philosophy without really going through misapplications, controversies, or other negative aspects of Epicureanism that some other philosophers and authors have blamed on this kind of thinking. “Tending the Epicurean Garden” is an excellent book that brings the best and most applicable aspects of Epicureanism. Without a doubt, it is a practical book for a better life and a must read for everyone. It is a book that I will enjoy giving as a present to friends and family.
The author seems to attempt to construct an eclectic system of beliefs based on epicurism, new atheism, anarchy, and a tinsy bit of zen. The author proposes a missionary effort to teach his "tradition" by forming a network of "gardens", epicurean holidays, and a guru system. The author also makes the mistake of elevating science from a tool for understanding to an inviolate idol. All this he does ,while claiming to be different from traditional faiths. The author totally misses the fact that Epicurian physics was proven wrong by science. To me it seems he is just replicating the errors of other faiths under a new mask. I see dogmatism to be totally opposite from the philosophical spirit of free inquiry. The book is not totally with out merit ,but it is not mature or great.
Epicurus wrote,"Vain is the word of a philosopher which does not heal any suffering of humankind. For just as there is no profit in medicine if it does not expel the diseases of the body, so there is no profit in philosophy either, if it does not expel the suffering of the mind." Hiram Crespo's book is an excellent teasing out of this in that he weaves together modern science, psychology and ancient wisdom to offer a more contemporary vision. While he attends to historic and academic details he puts Epicurus' teachings in a modern light where it matters to those who are primarily interested in healing their suffering. His style of writing is beautiful, elegant and very accessible-often poetic at times-I found myself highlighting quite a bit!
A great addition to any home Epicurean library.
I found this book to be very readable and interesting and to have actionable and insightful ideas which were well communicated.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. While we only have snippets of Epicurus writings hiram's filling in of gaps was insightful.
